A CBOM is a single product BOM that gives organized visibility into all the component options by type, then nestles all the variables beneath it.
A bill of materials (BOM) is a basic requirement for manufacturing a physical product. It’s a comprehensive list of parts, assemblies and other materials needed plus all the instructions for turning these materials into the finished product.
For a computing device like a single-purpose server, it’s cumbersome for a BOM to list all its options and interdependencies. Even the most basic systems require specifications for memory, CPU, PSU, motherboard, etc. to accommodate their use case. Then introduce unique customizations to suit different end user requirements and more component options are required. Combine these all on one or many BOMs and it becomes painful to maintain and track.
For simplicity, typically hardware integrators dumb-down the process by creating multiple BOMs. But anyone who has to shuffle through piles of BOMs to match up the right configuration for a sales order will tell you it can be problematic and error-prone.
MBX’s unique solution – the CBOM.
A CBOM is a single product BOM that gives organized visibility into all the component options by type, then nestles all the variables beneath it. From one CBOM a customer can get really granular on their options, for example, selecting among multiple memory, storage, GPU, and power supply options and more — measurably reducing the time and complexity of generating a sales order.
A CBOM also has significant product estimating and lifecycle benefits. Customers can quickly identify the cost ramifications of adding more horsepower to a system, for example. The advantages of costing flexibility on the product while speeding up decision making add to the value of CBOMs.
CBOMs are developed by MBX hardware engineers after determining the best options to meet customers’ systems requirements as well as their goals for long-lasting business value.
