Wherever You Choose to Work, Culture Matters

We just completed Employee Appreciation Week with daily activities galore, but for me, Thursday’s events really stood out — the final round of “Team Scrabble” in the morning, followed by “Lightsaber Duels” in the afternoon. Yes, these activities were happening during our workday at MBX. Are each of us a little competitive? We are. Do we perform better as teams than as individuals? You bet we do.

Some may wonder, what’s the point of these periodic workday distractions and friendly competitions? At MBX, Employee Appreciation Week is dedicated to really reinforcing to our employees how much they’re valued. And while we strive to maintain a strong company culture all year long, the activities during this week in particular help build camaraderie and teamwork.

Why is this important?

There are a number of reasons why our culture matters. While we all work in departmental teams every day, some departments rarely cross paths. When we were smaller — in number of employees and facility — we were in close physical proximity to one another, so it was easier to get to know coworkers as people. Just like any relationship, if it’s something you want, you have to work at it. So we do work at maintaining our close-knit culture, even as we grow to hundreds of employees. Team Scrabble was a great example of people coming together from different departments for some friendly competition and having fun together.

An added benefit to building relationships with coworkers from different departments is that it enables us to serve our customers better. This is significant because our customers choose us to be their hardware partner for the long haul, and it’s important that we’re all on the same page — and we’re giving a consistent customer experience — no matter who at MBX our customers interact with. We’re all in this together, and our culture directly correlates to our success at keeping our customers happy. In our lightsaber duels, teammates came together to give verbal cues to guide their blindfolded players to get to the other team’s blindfolded players first. We had a lot of laughs and, indirectly, worked on our communication skills at the same time!

While I can say many things about why I feel MBX is a great place to work, the proof is in the pudding. We are grateful that our employees tend to be here for the long haul, and in some cases the entire 22 years of our existence. We’re also grateful for our employees’ input that has earned us multiple ‘great place to work’ awards. When employees feel valued and return the favor by communicating this on surveys, their actions speak louder than any words I can say.
